So many Garnets!

posted in Collecting Locations, Filming, Family & Friends |

Monday morning, after a good nights sleep, we met Cal Graeber and Jeff Kent in the Coyote Range to film them collecting garnets, and maybe do a little ourselves.

They were using a blasting system powered by compressed air to put cracks in the hard epidote
Matrix…

…then using hand tools to work out the sparkly garnets.

Some very nice garnets were found after a few hours of hard work.

I enjoyed all of the photos except the one where the chistle is stuck to my posterior.
We have treated the rocks with Phosphoric acid and a follow-up of the finished material would be a worthy addition to your web-site. I am making a trip to Peterson Peak after the 4th of July weekend to collect. Come along and let’s dig Amethyst sceptres.

Really great article and pictures of the recovered garnets. One question though on the compressed air blasting system, is this commercially available? I collect at a couple of hard rock localities and would love to try something like this. Thanks.
